Introducing Polaris: building a better future for audio plugin licensing

Plugin developers should spend their time building great plugins, not building licensing systems. Here is what we are building, who it is for, and where we are going next.

Audio plugin licensing shouldn't be complicated.

For plugin developers, licensing is an essential part of turning great products into a sustainable business. But as a plugin business grows, so does the complexity behind managing it — issuing licences, activating customers, supporting different products and versions, managing subscriptions and understanding how licences are being used.

Too often, developers end up building and maintaining this infrastructure themselves, or stitching together a collection of tools that weren't designed specifically for the way audio plugin businesses work.

We think there is a better way. That's why we're building Polaris.

Who are we?

Polaris is building licensing infrastructure specifically for audio plugin developers and sample library providers.

We believe the people creating the sounds, instruments and effects that musicians rely on should be able to focus on what they do best: building great products. They shouldn't have to spend their time building the infrastructure required to license, activate and manage those products.

That's where Polaris comes in.

What are we trying to achieve?

Make audio plugin licensing easier to build, easier to manage and easier to scale.

We want Polaris to provide the infrastructure behind modern audio plugin businesses, giving developers the tools they need to manage licensing without having to build the underlying systems themselves. That means making it straightforward to:

  • Create and issue licences
  • Activate and validate plugins
  • Manage customers and licences
  • Integrate licensing directly into plugins
  • Support different products and licensing models
  • Understand what is happening across licences and customers
  • Build licensing workflows around the way each business operates

And importantly, we want this to feel like part of the developer's product — not another complicated system they have to manage.

Built for audio plugin developers

We believe licensing infrastructure should fit around the way plugin developers already work. That's why JUCE and our SDK are central to Polaris.

Our goal is to make it straightforward for developers to integrate licensing into their plugins without having to build the licensing infrastructure themselves. The SDK and API provide the building blocks for connecting a plugin to Polaris, while giving developers the flexibility to create the licensing experience that makes sense for their products.

You build the plugin. Polaris takes care of the licensing infrastructure.

Start with audio. Focus on the people building it.

We're deliberately starting with audio.

We know that plugin developers and sample library providers have specific licensing challenges. Products can have different editions, versions, subscriptions, activations and customer requirements. Developers also need to balance protecting their products with providing a smooth user experience for the people who buy them.

We want Polaris to be built around those real-world requirements. That means listening to developers, understanding how they actually sell and support their products, and building the platform around those needs.

We're not interested in building technology for technology's sake. Polaris is our technology, but the product should be shaped by the people who use it.

More than licence keys

Licensing is about much more than generating a licence key. It's about the relationship between a developer, their products and their customers.

As Polaris develops, we want to give plugin businesses better visibility and control across that entire lifecycle — from issuing a licence, through activation and ongoing use, to managing the customer relationship. That means building better tools, better integrations and better insights into what is happening across a plugin business.

But we're going to build it one step at a time.

Where we're going

We're still early. We're working with the first generation of Polaris, refining the platform and learning from the developers who are helping us shape it.

Our immediate focus is simple: build the licensing infrastructure that audio plugin developers actually want to use.

Over time, we want Polaris to become an essential part of the infrastructure behind modern audio plugin businesses. A platform that developers can rely on. A platform that integrates naturally into their products. And a platform that grows with their business.

Why Polaris?

Because we believe audio plugin developers should spend their time building great plugins — not building licensing systems.

Licensing should be reliable, flexible and straightforward to integrate. It should work with the tools developers already use. It should give developers control without adding unnecessary complexity. And for the customer buying a plugin, it should simply work.

That's what we're trying to build with Polaris: better licensing infrastructure for the people building the future of audio.

We're just getting started. Welcome to Polaris.
